Crowns and Bridges
To strengthen and enhance
What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?
Dental crowns and bridges are common restorative dental treatments used to repair damaged or missing teeth, restoring both function and appearance.
Dental Crowns:
- Purpose: A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a tooth-shaped cover that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance.
- Materials: Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, or a combination of materials, depending on the specific needs and preferences of the patient.
- Procedure: The tooth is prepared by removing any decay or damage, and then an impression is taken to create a custom-fitted crown. The crown is fabricated in a dental laboratory and permanently cemented onto the tooth.
Dental Bridges:
- Purpose: A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap between adjacent teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) held in place by dental crowns on the neighbouring natural teeth.
- Types: There are different types of dental bridges, including traditional bridges (held in place by dental crowns), cantilever bridges (anchored on one side), and Maryland bridges (bonded to adjacent teeth with metal or porcelain wings).
- Procedure: Like crowns, the neighbouring teeth are prepared to receive dental crowns, and impressions are taken to create a custom bridge. The bridge is then fabricated and cemented into place, effectively filling the gap left by the missing tooth or teeth.
Benefits of Dental Crowns and Bridges:
- Restoration of Function: Crowns and bridges restore the ability to bite, chew, and speak properly, improving overall oral function.
- Protection: Crowns protect weakened or damaged teeth from further decay or fracture, while bridges prevent shifting of adjacent teeth and maintain proper bite alignment.
- Aesthetic Improvement: Crowns and bridges enhance the appearance of the smile by covering imperfections and filling gaps left by missing teeth.
- Durability: With proper care and maintenance, dental crowns and bridges can last for many years, providing long-term solutions for dental restoration.
- Customization: Crowns and bridges are custom-made to match the shape, size, and colour of the natural teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural-looking result.
Aftercare and Maintenance:
- Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash can help maintain the health of the teeth and gums supporting the crowns and bridges.
- Regular Dental Visits: Routine dental check-ups and cleanings are essential to monitor the condition of the crowns and bridges and address any issues promptly.
- Avoiding Hard Foods: Avoid biting down on hard or sticky foods that could potentially damage or dislodge the crowns or bridges.
- Protective Mouthguard: If engaging in sports or activities that pose a risk of dental injury, wearing a mouthguard can help protect the crowns and bridges from damage.
