Root Canal Therapy
Saving teeth and removing pain
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that’s badly decayed or infected. It involves removing the damaged nerve and pulp inside the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the area, and then filling and sealing it to prevent further damage. This will remove the pain from a toothache.
Why You Might Need a Root Canal
- Deep Decay: When a cavity goes too deep and affects the tooth’s pulp.
- Infection or Abscess: An infection inside the tooth or at the root tip.
- Cracked or Chipped Tooth: Damage that exposes the tooth’s pulp to bacteria.
- Repeated Dental Procedures: Multiple treatments on the same tooth can lead to pulp damage.
- Injury: Trauma to the tooth that affects the nerve.
Signs You Might Need a Root Canal
- Severe Toothache: Pain when chewing or applying pressure.
- Prolonged Sensitivity: Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed.
- Discoloration: Darkening of the tooth.
- Swelling and Tenderness: Swelling in the nearby gums.
- Pimple on the Gums: A small bump on the gums near the affected tooth.
The Root Canal Procedure
- Initial Examination: Your dentist will take X-rays to see the extent of the damage and plan the procedure.
- Numbing the Area: Local anaesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and surrounding area.
- Accessing the Pulp: A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canals.
- Removing the Damaged Pulp: The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed from the tooth.
- Cleaning and Disinfecting: The inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
- Filling the Canals: The empty root canals are filled with a special material called gutta-percha to seal them.
- Sealing the Tooth: The opening in the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
- Restoration: Often, a crown is placed on the tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function.
After the Procedure
- Mild Discomfort: It’s normal to feel some sensitivity or mild pain for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually help.
- Good Oral Hygiene: Keep up with brushing and flossing to maintain oral health.
- Avoid Hard Foods: Be gentle with the treated tooth until it’s fully restored with a crown.
- Follow-Up: Attend any follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and fitting of the final restoration.
Benefits of Root Canal Therapy
- Saves Your Tooth: Preserves your natural tooth, avoiding the need for extraction.
- Relieves Pain: Eliminates the source of pain and infection.
- Restores Function: Allows you to chew and bite normally.
- Maintains Smile: Keeps your smile looking natural without gaps.
Common Myths About Root Canals
- Painful Procedure: Modern techniques and anaesthesia make root canals no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
- Better to Pull the Tooth: Saving your natural tooth is usually better for your oral health and function.
- Only for Severe Pain: Sometimes, a tooth needs a root canal even if it’s not causing pain yet.
