Whitening and Bleaching
For Stunning Smiles
What Is Dental Bleaching and Whitening?
Dental bleaching, also known as teeth whitening, is a cosmetic dental procedure that lightens the colour of your teeth and removes stains and discoloration. It’s a popular way to enhance your smile and boost your confidence by achieving a brighter, whiter smile.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening works by using bleaching agents to break down stains and discoloration on the surface of your teeth. The most common bleaching agent used in whitening treatments is hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These agents penetrate the enamel to reach the discoloured molecules and break them apart, resulting in a whiter appearance.
Types of Teeth Whitening
In-Office Whitening
This is done at the dentist’s office and typically involves a higher concentration of bleaching agent and a special light or laser to enhance the whitening process. It provides fast and dramatic results in just one visit.
Take-Home Whitening Kits
Your dentist provides custom-made trays and bleaching gel for you to use at home. You wear the trays filled with the bleaching gel for a specified amount of time each day, usually for a couple of weeks, to achieve gradual whitening results.
Over-the-Counter Whitening Products
These include whitening toothpaste, strips, and gels that you can purchase without a prescription. While not as potent as professional treatments, they can help maintain or enhance the results of professional whitening treatments.
Benefits of Teeth Whitening
- Enhanced Appearance: Whitening your teeth can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile, making you look younger and more attractive.
- Boosted Confidence: A brighter, whiter smile can boost your self-esteem and confidence in social and professional settings.
- Non-Invasive: Teeth whitening is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that doesn’t require any drilling or removal of tooth structure.
- Quick Results: In-office whitening treatments can provide immediate results, while take-home kits offer gradual but noticeable whitening over time.
- Customized Treatment: Professional whitening treatments can be customized to meet your specific needs and desired level of whitening.
Who Is a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Most people with healthy teeth and gums are candidates for teeth whitening. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with:
- Severe tooth sensitivity
- Gum disease or untreated dental issues
- Allergies to whitening agents.
- Dental restorations (such as crowns or veneers) on front teeth, as they won’t respond to whitening treatments.
Aftercare and Maintenance
- Good Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss regularly to maintain your newly whitened smile and prevent future stains.
- Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks: Limit consumption of foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and berries.
- Touch-Up Treatments: Periodic touch-up treatments can help maintain your results and keep your smile looking bright and beautiful.
Potential Side Effects
While teeth whitening is generally safe and well-tolerated, some people may experience temporary side effects such as tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. These typically subside shortly after treatment and can be managed with desensitizing toothpaste or gels.
